It has been years since I have stayed in a Hampton Inn, as they just stopped being in cities to which I travelled to frequently. But a recent promotion between Hilton Hhonors and Aeroplan offering me free Gold Status, and 50,000 points if I stayed four times by May 15th drew me to this Downtown Austin Property.

Although a few blocks off the beaten path, it is really close to the Convention Center and would make a great hotel to stay at for an event such as SXSW.

My plane landed in Austin at 1:30 in the afternoon, so I decided to use public transit to get downtown, as the Airport Flyer 100 bus stops a few blocks away from the hotel on 6th street. Bus fare is $1.00 and 40 minutes after stepping on the bus, I was in my room. Although not all too convenient if you had a large amount of luggage, with my roll-aboard and the beautiful weather, I did not mind the four block walk at all.

The greeting at the check-in desk was friendly, and the attendant very efficient. She recognized my Hhonors Gold Status, asked for a credit card and ID, and told me that breakfast was served from 6:00 -10:00 am on the second floor, and that Monday to Thursday there was free beer, wine and appetizers from 5:00 - 6:30 pm also on the second floor.

Like at all other Hampton Inns, Internet access is free, and there is an access code printed on your room key folder.

WifiToday, SPG Platinum Members the world over are rejoicing at news of a new benefit... Free In-Room Internet at more than 940 hotels around the world, starting March 1, 2010.

It has long been a complaint of mine, and thousands of others, that high-end luxury hotels charge for Internet Access, while cheaper, lower-quality hotels often include Internet Access free of charge. The thinking has always been, that the people staying at these properties are either uber-rich or on business expense accounts, and that is why they charge so much for Internet Access, Valet Parking, and in-room telephone calls.

But Starwood Hotels has come through with a benefit for Platinum Elite members (those who stay 25 times or 50 nights a year), with free in-room internet. This is likely in response to Hyatt who offered the same benefit to its top-tier members in 2009, and Fairmont who offers all loyalty program members free internet access.

I know myself, I often take the added cost of Internet into account when booking a room, and have often adjusted my plans to avoid a hotel that doesn't include it or have left the hotel in search of a cafe with free or low hourly rates for Internet access.

Westin Amazon Promotion I am a big fan of Westin Hotel towels and pillows, and after each stay, say to myself that I have to get some for the house. The prices of these items, like most hotel-branded merchandise is usually a little higher than I would pay. However I no longer will have any excuses not to buy them, because there is a new promotion about to begin on February 22nd, which will earn you $100 in amazon gift cards for each two stays at Westin Hotels and Resorts.

Although you can use the gift cards on any Amazon purchase, it looks as though the promotion is timed with the release of Westin Wellness Collection products on Amazon.com.

Stays in Canada and the US at Westin Hotels and Resorts, with arrivals on Sundays to Thursdays, between February 22, 2010 and May 13, 2010 are valid for this promotion. You can earn a maximum of three $100 gift cards during this promotion.

From the Westin Registration Website...

Gift Card claim codes will be emailed within four weeks after your second eligible stay, so you can treat yourself to the Heavenly® pillows, robes or millions of other items at Amazon.com.

bmi-star-logo-150dpiThere has been much discussion over the past year about what would happen to the UK Based airline bmi and their Frequent Flyer program, bmi Diamond Club, since they are now a subsidiary of Lufthansa.

Last week bmi made some announcements regarding the removal of Business Class from flights from London Heathrow within the UK and to Ireland, as well as some changes to their Diamond Club frequent flyer program.

Today I just received an email from bmi Diamond Club, indicating that my account has been credited with 3000 status miles to make up for the elimination of the Blue Plus tier in their program.

This totally makes sense, as Diamond Club resets your status miles, and your qualifying year every time you cross a new threshold. The threshold for moving from their lowest level of status Blue, to Blue Plus was 3000 miles, so basically with the elimination of the Blue Plus level they are giving you back the 3000 status miles they have taken from your account, and are saying keep collecting to get to the next level, which is Silver.

Below is a copy of the email I received from them today...
